Ubuntu and some gnome based distros use a centralized password management tool called Seahorse, which is a GUI front end to GNOME’s keyring management system. It stores all your saved passwords, PGP keys, SSH Keys etc. used in different applications with a master password. This master password is same as your initial login password.

Usually, when you login, the keyring is automatically unlocked. But when you change your login password or enable automatic login, the keyring cannot be unlocked automatically and a prompt appears, “Enter password to unlock your login keyring”.

The solution is, if you recently changed your login password, change the keyring password also. To change the keyring master password, go to “Menu > Applications > Accessories > Passwords and Encryption Keys“. Then right click a folder and select “Change Password“.

You will be asked for the old password and the new password. Enter the new password same as the current login password.

If you have forgot the old password, then you have to delete the keyring. But this will also delete all the saved passwords. Just give the command in terminal,

rm ~/.gnome2/keyrings/login.keyring

Next time, it will ask for a new password.

If you have automatic login enabled, you might need to use blank password. But this is not safe and not recommended as everyone can have access to your saved passwords.
