Linux MATE can provide the same desktop experience as Gnome2. Perberos initially forked Gnome 2 and called the project MATE. Users and developers were successful at running MATE in Arch Linux and due to popular demand Perberos made it easier for MATE to compile under Debian. Many gnome2 users have shifted to Xfce to avoid gnome3. MATE can give you same old experience.
Installation of MATE is simple as packages are available for many distros. Installation instructions are available on site.
